Sonic Champions is a game originally thought of by me, but run now by Team M Produtions.
Original Concept
Sonic Champions was a game idea I had back in early 2006 when I was a member of a Sonic forum. The game was to be made with RPG Maker XP, meaning it would be in RPG format (being the fact that you walk around overworld maps and fight with turn-based battles on a different screen.) However, despite the programs default settings, I wanted to make it like a normal Sonic game. The concept was to combine three styles of gameplay; Sonic Adventure's 'adventure stage' maps being separate from the 'action stage', Sonic Battle's fight system (though as said, being turn-based), and Sonic Heroes' three-member teams.
The story was simple, but I tried to make it interesting. Sonic and the others were just taking a break one afternoon and got into who was most helpful during Eggman's challenges, which soon turned into a heated discussion over who was better. Some stupid remarks led this to becoming a battle of male VS female, with Knuckles on the sidelines to avoid all the drama. After this little argument they came to a decision; Whichever team found all the Chaos Emeralds first was superior. Team Supersonic consists of Sonic, Tails and Shadow, whereas Team Girlpower (yeah, I know) consists of Amy, Cream and Rouge. Shortly after they went their separate ways, Metal Sonic shows up at different times, showing them that they really do need to find the Chaos Emeralds before Eggman can get them.
Gameplay
Despite the fact that RPG Maker XP only makes a certain type of gameplay, I tried my best to make it more like the Sonic games. The stages made you play as only one character, which would be whoever is needed to clear the stage. Sonic/Amy stages were called "Speed Stages," which simply requires you to run mostly, much like the SEGA Genesis and GameBoy Advance series of games. Tails/Cream stages were "Flight Stages," which all involved flying, of course. And Shadow/Rouge stages were "Power Stages," which involved a mix of running (though in all directions inside of just left or right), as well as some fighting. These were intended to be lesser used and more difficult, and would also be used for sneaking around certain maps.
Battles are turn-based, meaning they played out as;
- Player 1 makes action
- Player 2 makes action
- Enemy 1 makes action
- Enemy 2 makes action
The enemies were simple in development. They simply included Metal Sonic, GUN Robots and Eggman Robots. However, there would have been more if I thought of more to add.
Sound/Music
- The theme for the game itself was "We Can," the theme for Team Sonic in Sonic Heroes.
- Depending on which team you went with, they played a certain battle tune. Team Supersonic's team had "You Can't Take Me" by Bryan Adams, and Team Girlpower had "Overprotected" by Brittney Spears.
- Even though most of the gameplay included just text, it played various voice clips from Sonic Battle and other Sonic games. Simple things like "Yes," "Okay," and grunts.
Changes
Shortly after meeting Ed S Ed (or Mighty), I told him about this idea, which got us into discussing many ideas. It got to where we currently are not working on this game itself, but instead a spin-off which focuses on a different team, who appears in Sonic Champions as a simple cameo. Currently, the project is closed, but this website will update it when it does get started again.
