A LEGO film.
Bionicle - Mask Of Light: The Movie
Type: Movie
Special: None
What Is It?
Years ago, LEGO (or LEGO Technic) made a set of action figure toys with their LEGOs, called Bionicle. As the years went by, new sets and new characters were made, with a story attached to them. The movie starts off after a few events have already happened, so people new to the story may be confused to what's going on. That goes for this review as well.
The story is focused around two Matoran; Takua and Jaller. Takua is known as the Chronicler. If I'm not mistaken, he is supposed to keep on record everything that happens on the Island of Mata-Nui. And Jaller is his best friend, who is captain of the Guard in the village of Ta-koro. Takua was exploring an underground area with lava, when he dropped a stone into the lava, which turned out to be a Great Kanohi mask. After taking it to the Turaga, they translated to discover it was the Mask of Light - A mask to be given to a new, 7th Toa. Takua and Jaller choose to go search for its owner, when the evil Makuta watches silently. He does not want such a thing to happen, so he prepares to create a new obstacle…
Quality
The animation is quite nice, very smooth detail. This was a movie intended to be on DVD, so no quality would be lost. The designs they gave the characters are a very big change compared to the toys, but they work much better than the toy designs.
Features
The movie features a nice cast, good animation, and an interesting story. All of the setting make it look intended to be for younger viewers from children to young teens, but I enjoyed it everytime I watched.
Extras
The DVD features commentary, storyboard comparison, the making of the series, as well as a translation of the Bionicle writing.
Worth It?
If you like action films, go for it. I'm sure LEGO fans will like to see how the series changes in movie form.
Related Products
Currently, there are two more films out now. Bionicle 2: Legends Of Metru-Nui, and Bionicle 3: Web Of Shadows, which depict events taking place long before this one. There's talk of a fourth movie, but nothing is out on the market yet.
Overall
Not the most impressive movie you'll see, but it should entertain you for a while.
